Why Should You Get Tested for HIV?

More than 20,000 Americans have HIV but don’t know their status. That’s too many people who may be spreading this disease without even realizing it. Our goal is to make HIV testing a routine process. We want more people being diagnosed early - before HIV becomes full blown AIDS, and before the disease is passed along to those they love.

We can stop HIV by making testing more accessible to all types of people - of every age, race, and sexual orientation. We’re particularly encouraging those in high risk groups, such as sexually active gay and bisexual men, as well as Hispanics and African Americans, to be tested annually.

The Process

By understanding how easy it is to receive an HIV test, you’ll help us educate others in the community. The process is as easy as 1-2-3:

During pre-counseling, our trained staff discusses how the test works, what results mean, and how HIV is transmitted. The tester will also discuss sexual health risks and substance abuse—all in a sensitive and professional manner.
The actual test is available in both OraQuick Rapid HIV testing, and blood testing. CARES typically uses the OraQuick test which looks for HIV antibodies in the person’s saliva.
During post-test counseling, the tester discusses the results. If the test is negative, the tester will mention the possibility of HIV exposure during the past three months and possible need to retest. If the test is positive, a confirmatory test is done, and the patient is scheduled an initial appointment with a medical case manager. We encourage timely access to care, and discuss known partners who may be at risk.
